I am very grateful to the Missouri Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for its financial support towards my first international dental mission trip which was to Uganda.
I have been very fortunate to grow up in two different cultures and as a child growing up, I knew that I wanted to be in a field that involved helping people in some way. I was exposed to hardworking people struggling and I knew that whenever I was able to help, I would. As my interest in dentistry perked, I already knew that I would make an effort to do mission work in different parts of the country and help change peoples lives as mine was also changed. MoAPD helped make that wish a reality.
In Feb 2014, I had the awesome opportunity to help provide dental services to children infected with the HIV virus in Uganda. I was part of a dental team that involved dentists from all parts of the US. We saw about 500 children and a few of their caretakers. The team I went with is a dedicated group of dentists that has been going to this particular site for at least 10 years. Mission work is such an inspiration and a blessing more so for the one providing the service than the recipients. It’s my hope and prayer that MoAPD continues to provide this opportunity as the impact is indescribable.
